#100WCGU – Wk99 – Prompt: … the air was expectant… – 104 words – “Play”
The air was expectant as students waited their call. It was time for the annual school play. Rehearsals had gone well. Backdrops had been painted, performance bugs smoothed out (mostly), positions learned, lighting and sound made ready.
An audience of parents and friends had gathered. The cue came. The play began.
Narrators introduced Dorothy and Toto. Somewhere over the rainbow the Munchkins awaited their guest.
The smiles on the audience faces told a story of pride and their enjoyment of an evening brightened by their children. Was the performance perfect? That would spoil the fun.
The air had been expectant and was now fulfilled.

This backdrop artwork was prepared by the children in the play. If you wish to make use of it, please contact me so I can seek permission from the school.
Saturday Centus – Wk#170 – Prompt: “I fell into a ring of fire…” – 107 words – “Seed”
“I fell into a ring of fire…” the old man of the tribe began.
Children, “Weren’t you burned?”
Smiling, “No, it wasn’t like the fire we sit near.”
“What was it?”
Continuing, “It was the fire of enlightenment.”
“What did it light?”
“Knowledge… My eyes were opened. I could finally see.”
“Were you blind before?”
“My eyes could see but I couldn’t.”
He saw their confusion.
He held up a seed, “Do you see the plant this will be?”
They replied they couldn’t.
“Yet it’s there waiting to grow. So it is with knowledge.”
The children were lost in discussion. The old man had planted the seed.
#100WCGU – Wk98 – Prompt: photo – 100 words – “School”
I’ve heard people say you could fry an egg in the heat when the temperature had reached only the low 30sC. Memories of my first school came to mind.
It was summer when I first arrived. A drought had been raging for two years. The grass still remaining was brown, dead. Waterholes were dry. Animals sought any midday shelter. The daily temperature in the shade reached 47C.
I tested the old saying. I’d left a frying pan in the sun, cracking an egg. The egg sizzled before starting to burn. No metaphor, it was hot enough to burn an egg.
Saturday Centus – Wk#169 – Prompt: photo and “how do you like to go up in a swing” – 110 words – “Ready!”
The sound of children laughing, memories now long passed.
“How do you like to go up in a swing?” my father had asked.
“Higher, daddy!” I begged.
The feeling of weightlessness before gravity pushed me back along my pendulum course was the childhood experience setting me on a path to my future. I enjoyed the feelings of weightlessness and had begged my father to make it last longer.
“Ready!”
Tethered with nothing more than a lifeline, I launched myself into the weightless void now so familiar. I am a specialist. My task is to keep my craft fit for humans as we explore the asteroids in search of mineral riches.
#100WCGU – Wk97 – Prompt: Heat – 100 words – “First Light”
Nothing… a burst of matter… expansion… form… planets… growth… billions of years of marvellous creation. We sit seemingly alone in the vastness of space. I marvel at what we are yet to discover in the universe.
Alarm, the clock beckons me to rise. The first touch of warming sunlight caresses my face, my thoughts soon lost to reality.
A new day begins. The sound of giggling children echoes through the house. The world awakes to their joy.
Laughter… rush… excitement… the children ready for a picnic on a summer’s day. Play… fun… cuddles… hugs. Heat, the warmth of family love.
