#100WCGU – Wk95 – Prompt: …”Pink nails?” she cried… – 104 words – “Better Future”

Beth was born at a time when girls were expected to marry and become mothers. From a young age, she rejected her dolls and favoured a construction set.

At first, her father frowned at her love of “boy’s” things until he saw the joy on her face. He guided her curiosity and, in time, accepted her as an apprentice carpenter. When Beth became licensed, he gave her a gift of specially made nails.

“Pink nails?” she cried.

Beth now heads the company. As each new home begins, she takes one of her treasures and hammers the first nail. Perhaps there’s one in your home.

Saturday Centus – Wk#166 – Prompt: photo – 100 words – “The Spinner”

It started a bright clear day, a great day for a hike. Not long into my walk, the first ominous clouds appeared. Wind whipped up and I could hear the beginning of rumbling.

I knew the dangers of being out in a storm but shelter was at hand, an old settler’s cottage long abandoned. With rain pelting down and lightning flashing across the sky now close, I entered the gloom.

A flash, the noise, my eyes nearly blinded, an apparition appeared. A spinning woman, a ghost from the past, she smiled as she faded. What tricks had the storm played?

#100WCGU – Wk94 – Prompt: …the angle was very acute… – 105 words – “Giant?”

Eyes followed the unknown visitor accompanied by one well known. The visitors stood before those gathered. The angle was very acute as they tilted their heads to study the unknown. Was he a giant?

The school’s Principal spoke, “Mr. Mannell will be your teacher until Mrs. Maxwell returns later this year.”

This was my introduction to the class of five year old children seated on the floor before me. In coming weeks, parents visiting the school were often amused to see a 185cm tall man skipping and dancing around the playground with ones so young.

I had achieved the start of a career I loved.

Saturday Centus – Wk#165 (164) – Prompt: Acrostic using father synonyms – 100 words – “Father, Daddy, Dad”

Father, Daddy, Dad Acrostic

.

From birth his caring for me begun,

A man who had his second son.

Time has run and much to mourn,

He taken young, we so forlorn.

Each year we think of days now gone,

Remembering makes his care live on.

.

Do I with fondness have thoughts to share?

A plethora examples of loving care.

Days with daddy when I was young,

Deeds of valour from war unsung,

Your lessons taught, your banner hung.

.

Day of days, loving cup to brim,

And us grown old, our thoughts not dim.

Dad, daddy, father, all words for him.

#100WCGU – Wk93 – Prompt: …when the judgement came it… – 105 words – “Eternity”

The time came to be observed, to review the happenings of the days. I was promised a fair and impartial assessment. Hopes were high as was the apprehension of the unknown.

We’ve heard said our lives pass before our eyes at times of threat. This was the experience. All was open to review and assessment. So much was covered yet the process was complete in what seemed an instant. I’d hoped for a Grade 1, 2 or possibly 3. An inadequate Grade 4 was unthinkable.

The time arrived. When the judgement came it was a 2. I’d made a difference.

I was summoned into heaven.

Saturday Centus – Wk#163 – Prompt: “I release all fears and doubts” – 106 words – “Threshold”

The time had come. I’d wanted to reach this moment in time. I stood on the threshold of my future.

A cold sweat beaded my forehead. My heart raced. My hands were clammy, my mind full of hopes and worries.

On the other side of the door I could hear movement and the sound of hushed voices. Through a slight gap in the door I thought I saw a face.

There was only a short time remaining to prepare myself.

I mentally repeated my mantra, “I release all fears and doubts.”

The door opened, “You can come in now. Your baby wants to meet his daddy.”

#100WCGU – Wk92 – Prompt: YELLOW – 100 words – “Primrose”

There are pixies.

When whiling away the afternoon in my garden I sensed movement out of the corner of my eye. Turning quickly, I saw one on a yellow daisy.

Discovered, she froze. I assured her I meant no harm.

She introduced herself, “My name is Primrose. I’m a Yixie, a yellow pixie. We care for all things yellow.”

“The other colours?”

“Bixies for blue and Rixies for red,” she explained.

“…but there are many colours.”

Primrose smiled, “We work together. We mix our colours. More or less, we make them all.”

“Yellow is my favourite.”

Primrose smiled, “Mine too.”

Saturday Centus – Wk#162 – Prompt: “If a June night could talk…” – 106 words – “Uninspired”

“Where’s the Sun go at night?”

“Hush, child.”

“Why do trees have leaves?”

“So many questions, child.”

“Why’s the sky blue?”

“It just is, child.”

If a June night could talk, what would it say?”

“Enough, child. I’m busy. I don’t have time for nonsense. Go and do something useful.”

In time she returned, “Look at my picture. Isn’t it pretty?”

“The colours are wrong, child.”

“I like the sky to be pink.”

The child grew to adulthood and had learned her lessons. She no longer questioned, no longer created. Imagination wasted time.

In a world full of colour and hope, her outlook was grey, uninspiring.

#100WCGU – Wk91 – Prompt: “…there’s always a sting in the tail…” – 107 words – “Jamie”

Their teacher was fond of facts and encouraging his class to share experiences.

“There are ten Australian bee species without stings.”

“…but there’s always a sting in the tail of the bee,” one student protested.

Their teacher showed photos of small, black, stingless bees.

After a slight pause, “Has anyone been stung by a bee?”

Stories were shared… then there was Jamie.

Jamie told of his experience with a magic bee. A sting caused him to shrink. He’d lived with bees for two days until returning to normal.

Teacher smiled, “There’s always a sting in your tale.”

Jamie, innocently, “No, sir, the sting was on my arm.”

Saturday Centus – Wk#161 – Prompt: “All gave some. Some gave all.” – 106 words – “Life Eternal”

Row by row they passed, young, straight and true to their wish to serve when their nation called. Into battle they went. When war was done, they returned. All gave some. Some gave all.

Each year they gathered to remember those who gave all. As is the way with time, their ranks grew less, their walk less straight. They reminisced their time with those who had joined their friends in life eternal.

Eventually all will pass. I imagine them again marching straight and true once more united. They’ll not be forgotten.

We will remember them and what they have given when we say, “Lest we forget.”
