Saturday Centus – Wk#108 – Prompt: Photo – 100 words – “Spies”

Melanie giggled, “I think she’s a fashion model. Look at her shoes.”

Abbie had another idea, “I think she is really a princess. She’s hiding from the evil queen.”

A man with shiny, black shoes walked by.

“He’s a police officer. They have shiny shoes.”

Abbie laughed, “No, he’s the prince looking for his princess.”

Another set of legs approached.

“Girls, why are you under the table?” a voice asked.

Abbie and Melanie sat up giggling.

“Sorry, mum, we were watching people go by and were guessing who they really were.”

“Abbie thinks everyone is a prince or princess.”

#100WCGU – Wk#43 – Prompt: “The flame flickered before…” – “Distant Memory”

The flame flickered before me. My grandchild sleeps in my arms. Candlelight sets the mood, a time to reflect. Just a moment in time, lost in distant memories.

Memories return of my children once so small. The many joys we had, the fears we faced. Now grown, the house sits lonely but for the times my grandchildren stay. No longer young of body but young of mind, I enjoy this moment.

She stirs and smiles, “Nana?”

Gently stroking her hair, “Yes, sweetheart.”

As she snuggled closer I thought, “One more treasured moment.”

The flame flickered before me, a treasured memory added. Life is good.

Saturday Centus – Wk#107 – Prompt: Photo – 100 words – “Guilt”

It was on the news, “A fire is raging in the mountains. Homes are now under threat. Police suspect the fire was deliberately lit.”

“That makes me angry,” said mom.

“How could someone do that?” added dad.

Stephen and Michael cowered at what they said. They hadn’t meant to start the fire. They were just making a campfire. They tried to put it out but it got away from them. They were scared to tell because they just knew they would be thrown in jail. The guilt was unbearable.

Stephen spoke first, “Mom, we have something bad to tell you.”

100 Word Challenge for Grown Ups #100WCGU – Wk#42 – Prompt: Liberty,Empire,Apple,Yellow,Enormous – “Legs”

The Big Apple has it all, the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, Yellow Cabs and an enormous faith in their “can do” attitude to life and the pursuit of happiness.

For one little life, the forest of legs quickly passing was overwhelming.

“Mamma?” a small whimper.

“Mamma!” more desperate.

Staying close to the edge of buildings, avoiding the teeming jungle of legs, a small life moved silently. Mamma hadn’t been seen since she had gone out in the darkness. Hunger and thirst finally forced a move.

There was movement, something reaching down, strange yet comforting in being lifted.

“Hello, kitty. Where’s mother cat?”

Saturday Centus – Wk#106 – Prompt: “Cream together butter and sugar…” – 105 words – “Snuggle”

“Daddy, I can’t sleep,” a tired voice drifted across the room.

“That’s okay, Michael, come and snuggle up with me,” I said making room for him on the sofa.

I covered him with a blanket and reached for the remote. We had a favourite DVD ready for such evenings.

“Cream together butter and sugar…” the woman on the television droned.

His eyelids grew heavy, “I miss mummy.”

I kissed him on the forehead, “I do too, sweetheart.”

There was something about the voice on the television that reminded him of his mother. Tomorrow would be the first Mother’s Day without her cheery voice greeting us.

100 Word Challenge for Grown Ups – Wk#41 – Prompt: photo – “Gastrocorpus?”

“This,” announced the museum guide, “Is thought to be a gastrolith-like bone mass.”

Susie, ten, had a mind for detail, “Doesn’t gastrolith mean stomach stone?”

“Aye, lassie, normally stone but this is bone.”

Susie stared at the mass, “But gastroliths aren’t that big.”

The guide smiled slyly, “For the creature, this was small. It’s from a dragon. Haven’t you heard of St. George’s dragon?”

“What bones are they?”

“Some are deer but most are from Nessie.”

Susie was confused, “The Loch Ness monster isn’t real. No one reliable has seen it.”

“True, not since the dragon had done with it.”

Saturday Centus – Wk#105 – Prompt: “It is our pleasure…” – 104 words – “Anniversary”

How could we say no? Our children wanted to prepare our anniversary meal.

Noises came from the kitchen until our son appeared, “It is our pleasure to provide you with an anniversary meal.”

We smiled at his seriousness.

The meal was three-course. Chocolate cookies were the appetizers followed by the main course of sandwiches with… we weren’t quite sure. Dessert was ice cream covered in marshmallows.

At bedtime, we kissed them goodnight, proud of how they’d tried to make the evening special.

As we started the clean up, we decided it was the best meal we’d ever had. The company always makes the difference.

100 Word Challenge for Grown Ups – Wk#40 – Prompt: Ruby – “Lost Child?”

“Ru…beee…” a name drifted across the valley.

Again, “Ru…beee…”

Fearing a child might be missing, I made my way towards the sound. If I could help, I’d be there. My experience in bushwalking would be handy.

Once more, “Ru…bee…***”

There was something more I couldn’t hear.

I called ahead, “Is Ruby lost?”

As I stepped out from amongst the trees, a man turned, “Ruby? No, mate, I said ‘roo be still’. My kangaroo got his foot stuck in the fence. I’ve been trying to get him out but he won’t be still.”

I smiled and retreated back through the trees.

100 Word Challenge for Grown Ups – Wk#38 – Prompt: “I’m exhausted. Shut the door behind you – “Tough Times”

Have you had one of those days when everything seems to go wrong?

I was late but it wasn’t my fault. Someone had thought it funny to trip me when I was carrying a drink. Work was already waiting when I sat at my desk.

When I had a break, I barely had time to have something to eat and have a drink because I had to stop friends fighting. The afternoon was no better.

Now I’m home.

“Are you all right?” It was her.

I’m exhausted. Shut the door behind you please, mummy.”

Saturday Centus – Wk#104 – Prompt: “There’s a yellow rose in Texas…” – 105 words – “My Girl”

There’s a yellow rose in Texas.

“I know the song,” nurse said seeing the sadness in his now lucid old eyes.

“Not the song. Texas in Australia.”

He continued, “It was a small town full of good people. I’d spent time there, bought a pup to have company. She was a bundle of fun and loved chewing my shoes.”

“Was she Rose?”

He smiled, “Yes, Rose was my girl. She was popular with all the kids. Everyone knew her. She knew everyone.”

“One day Rose didn’t see a speeding car. I buried Rose under our favourite tree and planted a rose.”

“A yellow rose?”

“Yes.”
