Saturday Centus – Wk#131 – Prompt: photo – 100 words – “Trick!”

What darkness treads the world this eve of All Hallows day? The ghouls in costumed splendour trick or treat their way door to door.

A shadowy figure watches the passing scene, its eyes intent on possible prey. Many pass. It pays no heed then a twinkle is seen in its eyes.

Five children, older than the others, stop some smaller and steal their treats. The bullies laughing, the figure steps from the shadows.

“Trick!” it calls.

Five little pumpkins touched by dawn’s first light, the spell is broken. The bullies, a lesson learned but no one would believe their tale.

#100WCGU – Wk63 – Prompt: …and winter will bring… – 104 words – “Maggie”

My Kindergarten class had been asked to find out about the seasons. It was Maggie’s turn.

“Maggie, what can you tell me about summer?” I asked.

“We can go swimming.”

“…and winter will bring…?”

“It gets cold.”

“How about spring?”

Maggie’s eyes lit up, “You get pretty flowers and lots of birds.”

I could see she best liked spring.

“What can you tell me about autumn?”

She hesitated, “They have no clothes.”

“Who does?” I asked puzzled by her answer.

“The trees,” she answered.

I smiled, “Yes, the trees lose their leaves.”

Saturday Centus – Wk#130 – Prompt: photo – 100 words – “See ME”

At birth, even my parents were repulsed on seeing my eyes. Too bright the sun in day, I preferred night or the shade of sunglasses.

I often sat alone.

Curiosity, revulsion, and shock greeted me daily.

“Freak!”

“Monster!”

“Vampire!”

I’ve heard them all.

I see the world as it is, unhidden by civilisation’s façade. I see their doubts and fears, sense their longings, and feel their darkest thoughts. They’re blind to most I perceive, all except for one.

Jason arrived, placing his arm around me, “Morning, Sammy.”

Jason, so pure a light in an often dark world, he sees ME.

#100WCGU – Wk62 – Prompt: …it can’t be that time… – 105 words – “Tropical”

A warming breeze blew across the cresting waves. Sand caressed my feet. I strolled carefree along a tropical beach. Not a care in the world came to mind. I was at peace.

My world started shaking.

It can’t be that time,” I thought.

I heard a sound, “Daddy, I’m hungry. Bubba needs a change.”

The tropical beach lost, I opened my eyes and was greeted by my five year old daughter’s face, “Morning, sweetheart.  Did you sleep well?”

She smiled, “I dreamt I was a princess.”

“Then daddy will get his princess her breakfast and change bubba.”

The tropical beach will be there next time.

Saturday Centus – Wk#129 – Prompt: “The leaves crunched under my boots until they didn’t.” – 109 words – “Difference”

Winter gave way to spring, spring to summer and summer to autumn. Each phase added its own page to my life’s story and my quest to make a difference in the lives of others.

I walked the path of life and felt the cool of winter, saw the spring’s colours and experienced the warmth of summer. I heard the sound of autumn leaves crunching under my boots.

My life’s autumn was a time of reflection. There were many memories I held close to my heart. They reminded me of the joys and tribulations.

The leaves crunched under my boots until they didn’t.

My epitaph read, “He made a difference.”

#100WCGU – Wk61 – Prompt: …I woke with another headache… – 105 words – “Jenna”

Jenna’s words haunt me every day, “Daddy, I woke with another headache.”

I knew this was more than a simple case of measles. My once lively Jenna was listless, her temperature high.

Day after day I sat by her hospital bed, my gloved hand holding hers afraid if I let go she would slip away. It was only measles. I didn’t know it could result in encephalitis.

One morning, I stirred on my bedside seat.

“Daddy, I’m hungry.”

Such simple words, such incredible joy.

Jenna doesn’t walk as well as before but she knows I’ll be there when she needs me, her hand in mine.

Saturday Centus – Wk#128 – Prompt: “How beautifully leaves grow old” – 105 words – “Mabel and William”

The summer leaves had gone, replaced by the gold, yellow and brown of autumn. Mabel and her lifelong love, William, sat hand in hand enjoying the warming sun.

How beautifully leaves grow old,” William suggested.

Mabel said contentedly, “Autumn is my favourite time of the year. The heat of summer gives way to cooler times.”

William gave one of those cheeky grins she had loved from their first meeting, “Not because we’re also in the autumn of our lives?”

“If only I were as beautiful as the autumn leaves,” Mabel sighed.

William held her closer, “You’ll always be more beautiful than all the seasons’ colours.”

#100WCGU – Wk60 – Prompt: …suddenly it was in my hand… – genre: amusing – 106 words – “The Wish.”

“What a thoughtful birthday gift,” I smiled.

Cindy grinned, “You put the wishing stone in your left hand and make a wish.”

After she left, I decided I’d try, “I wish I had tonight’s Lotto numbers.”

My right hand grew heavy. Suddenly it was in my hand, tomorrow’s newspaper and the results.

“I wish I had this when I was a kid,” I said without thinking.

A dummy appeared in my right hand. The room grew large.

“Goo!”

My class re-entered the room, “Look at the cute baby!”

I realised I was a baby too young yet to speak, the stone too big for my hand.

Saturday Centus – Wk#127 – Prompt: “Sometimes you bend. Sometimes you break” – 106 words – “Adapt”

The old ones taught us, “Sometimes you bend. Sometimes you break.

We didn’t understand the meaning of these words when young. We thought bending or breaking might hurt.

Our tribe lived by rules. They guided us and protected our ways. We thought they couldn’t be broken. Experience taught us the true meaning of the old ones’ words.

When times grew hard, we bent the rules and hunted beyond our lands. When need arose, we broke our rules and added new.

When survival in a harsh world challenges, it’s better to bend or break tradition than perish. We must be willing to adapt in order to survive.
