Saturday Centus – Wk#100 – This week a 53 word prompt – 153 words – “ARK”

My untied shoelace changed my life. As I leaned down to re-tie it, I kicked away a few leaves. When I turned my head slightly to look where the leaves had been, I was astonished to see a rubber-banded wad of hundred dollar bills nestled in a little indentation in the muddy ground.

There was no moral dilemma. The money wasn’t mine. It had to be handed in.

A note inserted in the wad read, “This is an ARK, an Act of Random Kindness. Use it wisely.”

I’d been given permission to keep it. I counted the notes. Never before had I held so much. Since retiring, I had a comfortable income from my pension but lacked purpose. I decided what must be done.

The donation to UNICEF for the African famine led to an offer to volunteer. Tomorrow, I fly out to help the relief program. An untied shoelace changed my life.

100 Word Challenge for Grown Ups – Wk#36 – Prompt:“What’s the rabbit for?” wondered Alice – 108 Words – “Marie”

Marie had an invisible friend. It worried her mother.

“I’m Doctor Dodgson. You can call me Alice. I’d like to speak to Marie alone.”

Alice was about to close the door when Marie warned, “He’s late.”

“What was the rabbit late for?” wondered Alice as she saw a rabbit enter. “I see you brought your pet rabbit.”

Marie giggled, “You see him?”

The rabbit stood, “Surely you remember me?”

Alice’s childhood memories flooded back, “White Rabbit?”

“It’s time for Marie’s adventures in Wonderland.”

Alice realised what fun lay ahead for Marie.

Speaking to Marie’s mother, “Marie is perfectly alright, I once had an imaginary friend just like hers.”

Saturday Centus – Wk#99 – Prompt: I’m living the dream,man… – 100 words – “Say What You Mean”

I heard someone say something strange, “I’m living the dream, man it’s good.”

I think he was a little weird. How could you be living a dream and why is it only for men? You’d have to be asleep.

My mum tells me I take things literally. I guess that means I think people say what they mean. Mum says he was probably smiling when he said it but I didn’t notice a smile. Mum’s says it’s my “aspburger” autism. I don’t know why burgers or even snakes have anything to do with it.

People should say what they mean.

100 Word Challenge for Grown Ups – Wk#35 – Prompt: …the red box… – 103 Words – “Cuddles”

“What’s in the red box, sweetheart?”

“Something special, grandpa. I saw a man on television carrying a red box. People said it had very important things inside.”

Grandpa was growing very curious.

“Can you keep a secret, grandpa?”

Grandpa nodded so the contents were revealed one at a time.

“A photo of us all together to show our family, a drawing of a heart to show our love, smiles for us when we’re sad and cuddles for us to keep us warm.”

The grandchild paused, “Grandpa, what do you think was in the television man’s red box?”

“Nothing as important as yours, sweetheart.”

Saturday Centus – Wk#98 – Prompt: It was only ninety-eight cents… – 98 words – “Fate & A Few Cents Short”

It was only ninety-eight cents short. You’d think the bus driver could’ve taken me part way. I trudged through torrential rain.

My mood was growing as dark as the weather. Nothing was going to cheer me.

Wait…

I ran to the source of the sound. A child was being carried along by the water. I could see a violent eddy marking a drain a little further along. The child would be sucked under.

Struggling to the child, I snatched him in my arms and carried him to safety.

It was only ninety-eight cents but it saved a life.

100 Word Challenge for Grown Ups – Wk#34 – Prompt: …but I turned it off… – 100 words – “Light and the Universe”

Time had almost arrived. All was ready for the beginning. Soon the word would be given.

“What’s this?” an amused voice resounded.

Time had started too soon, “…but I turned it off. I thought it’d cool.”

“Little angels need to learn patience,” came a smiling reply.

“Are you angry?”

“No, I knew it would be so.”

A singularity, immensely hot and dense started its rapid expansion, cooling as it moved. Subatomic particles formed. Protons, neutrons and electrons combined to make atoms, the process begun.

There was light and it was good. Time will tell if what’s given is used wisely.

100 Word Challenge for Grown Ups – Wk#33 – Prompt: Picture – 100 words – “I Believe”

A frantic mother was searching the gallery for her lost daughter. She was about to call a gallery guard when she saw her daughter sitting, staring at a driftwood sculpture of a horse.

“Sweetheart, mummy was worried. You should have stayed with me.”

“…but this horse is beautiful. I’m wishing she was real.”

“Wishing won’t make it happen. It’s not real.”

“Daddy always tells me if I dream and believe, I’ll achieve so I’m wishing she was real.”

Mummy sat with her daughter and listened to her whisper, “I believe.”

Her daughter pointed to the horse now becoming real, “See.”

Saturday Centus Wk 96 – Prompt: “Saying goodbye was harder than she thought” in 107 words – “Wendy”

From childhood, Alexandra was destined to care for animals. In time, she joined with friends to buy an animal refuge. Her goal was to have it run by like-minded volunteers.

This is how she met Wendy, the name given a young orphaned wombat. Wendy, so young, didn’t have much of a chance of survival. Most didn’t yet Alexandra was determined and spent many sleepless nights.

“This one will survive,” she said as Wendy snuggled up to her.

As is the goal of rescuing wildlife, the time came to release Wendy. For Alexandra, saying goodbye was harder than she thought. Wendy took one look back and was gone.
